Excerpt from the Book

His ancestor’s name triggered a flood of memories for Stefan of his grandparents’ house. There, he, Julia, and Hugo had stumbled upon Anna Maria’s secret prayer room. This unexpected discovery had set in motion a thrilling but perilous journey, transporting them back in time to ancient Israel where they met David, the young shepherd who defeated Goliath.

With a knowing look, Hugo winked at Stefan and maintained his silence.

Mom stood up. “Let’s prepare to get off. From what I’m told, the train doesn’t stop for long.” She reached up to get her suitcase from the overhead rack, but Hugo beat her to it. He pulled it forward a little too quickly, and the heavy case dropped to the floor with a loud bang.

“You almost crushed my foot,” Stefan yelled, pushing Hugo away. “You’re such a weakling.” The physical differences between the two boys—Stefan was about fifteen pounds heavier and one inch taller—seemed only to exacerbate the tension in their relationship.

“Stop acting like an idiot,” Julia huffed at her brother.

When Stefan noticed Hugo’s forlorn expression, a pang of guilt crossed his mind but promptly flickered and died.

About the Author

Carol’s passion is to write exciting stories that encourage, inspire, and boost the reader’s faith, possibly because she has always felt like an outsider. She was born in North Africa to American parents and grew up in France. At age 15, her family’s abrupt move to Philadelphia resulted in a rough transition to American life.

After graduating from Penn State, Carol joined the Army in search of adventure. She was stationed in exotic—for her—locations like California, Arizona, and Texas.

Since then, Carol has lived in Krakow, Poland, where she teaches English and organizes language camps. She also writes a blog on faith-related topics.

Carol enjoys watching or reading a good murder mystery and getting nervous while watching NFL games.
