Just hi? Jamie’s shoulders sank. Elena would be crushed. But she wouldn’t stomp off. That wasn’t like her.

“You didn’t talk to her?” Jamie asked.

He shrugged. “Not really. What’s going on?”

Mr. Cabot held his phone. “She’s not answering her phone. And no text response either.”

“Oh.” Noah looked genuinely puzzled. “I mean, I didn’t see her leave with anyone. But maybe Mrs. Cabot came to pick her up?”

Mr. Cabot shook his head. “Mrs. Cabot is out of town.”

Jamie hugged her violin against her side. “I saw you walk out when I went back inside. How come it took you so long to leave?”

His eyebrows rose. He stared at her before responding. “I was catching up on texts in my car. Had some time to kill before I head home to babysit my little brother. I didn’t realize I was on a timer.” He checked his phone. “And I’m gonna be late if—”

“Did you see anyone approach her?” Jamie pressed. “Any cars pull up?”

“No? I wasn’t really paying attention.” He looked between them, his eyes narrowing. “You’re scaring me. Just wait. She’ll show up. Go check the security camera. I’m sure it’ll show you she got picked up by a friend or somebody.” He put his car into gear again. “I really need to go. Text me when she shows up.”
