Ellie smirked at her dramatization. Then she raised her eyebrows. “I sure hope you’re not ready for kids. You could never be granted a child permit at your age anyhow.”
“But what if I somehow got pregnant?”
“I’m pretty sure there’s a bunch of steps prior to just becoming pregnant.” She paused thoughtfully. “And if your body somehow slipped into a fertile state, your bracelet would not stop alarming until your hormone levels were adjusted. But if it somehow still happened, TEAMMATE would take your baby. I remember overhearing my parents talk about a high school girl in that same situation when we were in second grade.” Everyone knew that the rules of TEAMMATE were set in stone. Disobedience was not an option if they wanted to enjoy their prosperous world. A proper permit was required to bring another Teammate into the game.
“Well, what if like…I didn’t tell anyone? I could totally hide it until I gave birth.”
Ellie rolled her eyes. She glanced up the dark aisleway of the bus, which was illuminated every few seats by the glowing bracelet of its occupant. A few children spoke in hushed conversations, but many tried to sleep during the long ride.
